Route of the day
All points shown were part of the original itinerary. Not all were visited — decisions made along the way are a natural part of any expedition. We kept them on the map in case you wish to explore them yourself.
What we lived
Our final morning began with departure from Daan Viljoen around nine, driving back to AfriCar to return the vehicles. The paperwork and handover took a little while — a fittingly unhurried end to a trip that had never been in much of a hurry. A transfer then took us to the airport, arriving around eleven, two hours before our flight. Check-in had been done online, so all that remained was a bag drop, border control, and security.
We boarded at one for Luanda — two and a half hours, landing at half past two local time, half past three by the clock we had been living on. Then a long wait, the kind that airports do best, until 11:55 at night, when we boarded for Lisbon. We landed at 7:10 in the morning.
Twenty-four days. Five people. Two cars. Roughly 5,000 kilometres of Namibian road, sand, salt, and gravel. Whatever we expected when we set off, it was not quite this — and we mean that in the best possible way.
